Voting Question: High MPG Car for commuting to work?

I'd like to live further away from work somewhere rural but the biggest stumbling block is the distance and commute, not only the travelling time but more especially the fuel costs. At the moment I live 20 miles away from work so commute 40 miles a day. I get on average around 35mpg give or take depending on traffic. I need about 1.1 to 1.2 imperial gallons per day in petrol. This is costing probably £130 to £150 a week for around 200 miles in total with average prices around £1.30 a litre. If the place I wish to live is 70 miles away from work and I would need to increase my travelling distance to a 140 mile commute a day, would this be possible, realistic, and to also reduce fuel costs by getting transport with better mpg? One thing my conscience could never allow me to do is to buy a dirty diesel car knowing that diesel fumes are one of the primary causes of respiratory illness and cancer today, and just how polluting they are on a local level. Are there any other options to consider like hybrid petrol-electric cars? motorbikes? microlites? What mpg can they get? Can you have high mpg and still good performance in a car?... Read More »
